Halogen lamps are a special kind of incandescent lamp. The principle is that when there is an electric current in the resistance, it will heat up, and when the temperature is high enough, it will emit black-body radiation of visible wavelength. Halogen lamp has two kinds commonly: iodine tungsten lamp and bromine tungsten lamp, its principle is same. When an incandescent lamp is lit, a small amount of tungsten evaporates at high temperatures, although the filament temperature does not exceed the melting and boiling points of tungsten. When the volatile tungsten atoms meet a cold bulb shell, they condense and precipitate, and over time the bulb shell accumulates a blackened tungsten film. This is the reason why ordinary incandescent lamps blacken after being used for a long time. If the bulb is filled with iodine, when the bulb is lit, the iodine evaporates into a gas. When the iodine vapor encounters the cooler tungsten, it reacts with it to form a low-boiling compound, tungsten iodide, which evaporates the tungsten deposited in the bulb's shell. Tungsten iodide gas will decompose at high temperature. When tungsten iodide gas meets the filament, it breaks down, leaving tungsten on the filament, and iodine continues to flow as a gas between the filament and the outer shell, and when it comes to the outer shell again, it reacts with tungsten on the outer shell... In this way, on the one hand, the filament kept volatilizing tungsten to the bulb shell, and on the other hand, iodine kept carrying tungsten back to the filament, so that the speed of filament volatilization consumption is greatly reduced, the lamp life can be extended. As a result, it is possible to make incandescent lamps with large amounts of power, such as 1,000 watts, from tungsten iodine lamps. If halogen is not added, if the ordinary incandescent lamp achieves such a high power, the life will be very short, difficult to use. Halogen lamps have been widely used in automotive lighting.
